Is Your Kitchen Losing Business to DoorDash?

It happens every day.

A guest checks into your hotel after a long day of travel.

They’re tired. They’re hungry.

Within minutes, they’re scrolling DoorDash, Uber Eats, or Grubhub.

Forty minutes later, someone from a local restaurant is walking through your lobby with dinner.

The guest is happy. The delivery company gets paid. The local restaurant gets paid.

Your hotel kitchen gets nothing.

The question isn’t whether guests will use delivery apps. They will.

The question is: How do you give them a better reason not to?

Convenience Wins

Hotels often assume guests leave because they want different food. That’s only part of the story.

They leave because ordering is effortless.

No phone call. No waiting on hold. No searching for a printed room service menu.

Guests simply grab their phone, browse photos, tap a few buttons, and food is on its way.

Your hotel should offer the same experience.

Make Ordering Mobile First

If guests have to pick up a phone to order room service, you’ve already introduced friction.

Instead, let them order from their own phone through a QR code in the room, a link in your mobile app, or a text message after check-in.

Guests should be able to:

  • Browse beautiful photos
  • See prices immediately
  • Customize their order
  • Add a dessert or beverage
  • Pay instantly
  • Track delivery

If DoorDash can do it, your hotel can too.

Make It Visual

People don’t order from text. They order from pictures.

Every menu item should have professional photography.

Instead of reading “Cheeseburger and Fries,” guests should immediately see a hot burger, crispy fries, and an ice-cold drink.

Great photography increases confidence and reduces decision fatigue.

Make It Fast

Guests don’t expect a gourmet experience after a long travel day. They expect convenience.

If your kitchen consistently delivers in 20 to 30 minutes, tell them. Set expectations, then exceed them.

Upsell Like Retail

Ordering from a phone creates opportunities that paper menus never could.

As guests add an entrée, suggest a dessert, a bottle of wine, or a gourmet snack for later.

Those small suggestions increase average order value without adding pressure.

Keep Guests Inside Your Ecosystem

Every time a guest orders through DoorDash, the hotel loses more than food revenue. It loses another opportunity to serve the guest.

The easier you make ordering from your kitchen, the less likely guests are to leave your ecosystem.

Don’t compete with delivery apps by offering hundreds of menu items. Compete by making your hotel’s ordering experience just as easy.

Your biggest competitor isn’t the restaurant across the street. It’s the app already on your guest’s phone.
